How to Cover Food in the Microwave

Three methods that can help in finding suitable ways to cover the food:

Nowadays the need for practical yet effective ways to enjoy the food, made microwaves people's go-to appliance for convenience and time saving. That’s why it’s essential to learn how to cover the food correctly to avoid problems with the heating. Here are three methods that can help in covering the food:

Tip: Make sure all the dishes are microwaveable.

Method 1: Choosing a Cover

Method 1: Choosing a Cover

1 Buy a flat or rounded plastic or glass cover for microwaving food

You can choose a cover that has several openings/holes so the steam doesn’t stay inside. Also if you’re using a plastic cover, its size should be large enough to prevent food from splattering and to avoid the plastic touching the food.

2 Enfold a paper towel over greasy food to prevent splatters.

Paper towels are usually used for catching grease and allowing steam to escape. Make sure they’re microwave safe and they are not made with recycled papers.

Method 2: Microwaving your Food Safely

1 Spread your food evenly

It’s better not to pile all the food in the center of the plate or else the edges of the food will heat faster than the middle.

2 Stir your food halfway through the heating time.

Choose half the amount of time expected for the food to heat. It’s advised to check on the food intervally and stir it well to ensure that all the food is heated evenly. In the case of microwaving for more than a few minutes; it’s better to stir the food once more and if you're reheating a leftover meal, it’s preferable to heat for 1 to 2 minutes.

TIP: Make sure to put enough distance between the cover and your face when you lift it to avoid the heat from getting right to you.

Method 3: Avoiding Damaging Materials

1 Avoid covering your food with brown paper

Sometimes, some people think they could put a sheet of brown paper or a newspaper to avoid splatters of food. But some people aren’t aware that these brown papers/bags are highly flammable and could set a fire inside the microwave. Newspaper and printed bags can also release toxic fumes from the ink and glue that's on them.

2 Never cover your food with anything metallic.

Always double check your containers if they contain anything metallic such as metallic paints, as the radio waves produced from the microwave could reflect them off, causing a spark. Moreover, aluminium foils must also be avoided and in case the food is cooked in a metallic pan, you could transfer it to a glass/ceramic plate then microwave it.

In conclusion, covering your food correctly will help you save time of deep cleaning it and help you live a healthy life.
